Tunnel Engineering and Underground Excavation Course
Learn tunnel engineering, excavation methods, support and lining, groundwater control, settlement, monitoring and underground risk management.
Training Outlines
Introduction
Tunnel performance depends on the interaction between excavation sequence, ground response, support installation and groundwater. Because subsurface conditions are uncertain, successful delivery requires adaptable design, disciplined monitoring and rapid interpretation of field behaviour.
This five-day course equips civil, geotechnical and tunnelling professionals to plan and evaluate underground works. Participants will compare mechanised and conventional excavation, design support and lining concepts, assess settlement and groundwater, and apply observational control. Workshops culminate in a risk-based tunnel construction strategy.
Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Interpret tunnel ground conditions.
- Select suitable excavation methods.
- Evaluate ground-support interaction.
- Design preliminary support and linings.
- Assess groundwater and settlement risk.
- Plan underground construction logistics.
- Use instrumentation for observational control.
- Develop a tunnel-risk strategy.
