Training Outlines
Introduction
Hydraulic structures must control and convey water safely across a wide range of operating conditions. Their performance depends on flow regime, transitions, energy dissipation, sediment interaction and the correct interpretation of analytical, physical and numerical models.
This five-day course equips hydraulic, water and civil engineers to design and assess spillways, gates, culverts, channels and energy-dissipation systems. Participants will apply open-channel principles, evaluate scour and cavitation risks, and develop modelling strategies with appropriate calibration and verification. Technical workshops culminate in an integrated hydraulic-structure design.
Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Analyse open-channel flow regimes.
- Design hydraulic control structures.
- Evaluate conveyance and transition losses.
- Design energy-dissipation systems.
- Assess cavitation and scour risk.
- Select physical or numerical models.
- Calibrate and verify hydraulic results.
- Develop an integrated structure design.
