Introduction
Earthquake-resistant design seeks controlled structural performance under uncertain and cyclic demands, not the elimination of movement. Reliable design depends on clear load paths, regular configuration, ductility, capacity-protected mechanisms and detailing that preserves intended behaviour.
This five-day course equips structural and civil engineers to interpret seismic demand and design lateral-force-resisting systems. Participants will apply dynamic and response-spectrum concepts, evaluate irregularity, design ductile reinforced-concrete and steel systems, and use nonlinear analysis for performance assessment. Technical exercises culminate in an integrated seismic design review.
Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Interpret seismic hazard and ground motion.
- Apply structural-dynamics principles.
- Select appropriate lateral systems.
- Evaluate torsion and structural irregularity.
- Apply ductility and capacity design.
- Detail seismic concrete and steel systems.
- Assess nonlinear structural performance.
- Complete a seismic design review.
