Training Outlines
Introduction
Tunnel performance depends on the interaction between ground, groundwater, excavation method, support timing, lining stiffness and construction sequence. Geological uncertainty and limited access make early warning, monitoring and adaptable response essential.
This five-day course follows tunnelling from investigation and method selection to excavation, lining and operational systems. Participants assess ground response, compare TBM and conventional methods, plan support, manage settlement and groundwater, and apply observational controls. Safety, logistics and verification remain integrated throughout.
Objectives
- Develop a tunnel ground and groundwater model.
- Select an appropriate excavation method.
- Evaluate ground-support interaction.
- Design preliminary support and lining concepts.
- Manage face, inflow and settlement risks.
- Plan tunnel logistics and temporary systems.
- Interpret instrumentation and trigger levels.
- Develop an observational response plan.
