Introduction
Thermal power plants must deliver reliable, flexible output while controlling fuel use, emissions and equipment stress. Engineering optimisation requires a system-wide understanding of thermodynamic cycles, component performance, heat losses and operational constraints.
This course develops practical methods for analysing and improving steam, gas-turbine and combined-cycle plants. Participants will construct heat balances, diagnose efficiency losses, evaluate flexibility and optimise major equipment and auxiliary systems.
Objectives
- Analyse Rankine and Brayton cycle performance
- Construct plant heat and mass balances
- Evaluate boiler and combustion efficiency
- Assess steam and gas-turbine performance
- Optimise condensers and auxiliary systems
- Quantify heat-rate and loss improvements
- Manage cycling and flexibility impacts
- Integrate emissions and water constraints
