Course Introduction

Temporary works can influence safety, sequencing and delivery across an entire construction project. Effective coordination brings together designers, contractors, supervisors and project managers so that responsibilities, information and authorisations remain clear. This course develops the practical judgement needed to recognise temporary works requirements, organise their control and respond appropriately when site conditions or project assumptions change.

Identify temporary works requirements and maintain a structured register
Prepare design briefs and coordinate design, checking and document-control activities
Plan inspection, hold-point and permit arrangements for controlled implementation
Manage changes, non-conformities and escalation throughout the temporary works lifecycle
Develop and present a practical temporary works coordination plan for a construction project

Who Should Attend

Temporary works coordinators and supervisors, site and project managers, construction managers, civil and structural engineers, design coordinators, contractor representatives and health and safety professionals involved in construction delivery. Participants should have practical familiarity with construction activities and site responsibilities.

Course Methodology

Facilitated briefings, construction case reviews, document workshops, coordination meetings, permit-decision exercises and a final project simulation. Participants develop a register, design brief, responsibility matrix and control plan using simulated project information. Feedback focuses on evidence, communication, role boundaries and the quality of recorded decisions.

Day One: Temporary Works Governance and the Coordinator’s Role

Recognising temporary works, temporary conditions and interfaces with permanent works
Roles of the designated individual, coordinator, supervisor, designer and checker
Formal appointment, competence, delegated authority and escalation
Management principles of BS 5975-1:2024 and its relationship to BS 5975-2:2024
Practical exercise: map project responsibilities and establish an initial temporary works register

Day Two: Planning, Registers and Design Briefs

Identifying requirements for excavations, propping, falsework, access and working platforms
Register status, ownership, priorities and coordination with the construction programme
Capturing site information, intended use, constraints and interfaces in a design brief
Clarifying responsibilities and information requirements with contractors and suppliers
Practical exercise: prepare a design brief and track outstanding information for a project scenario

Day Three: Design Coordination and Assurance

Managing interfaces between temporary works designers, permanent works designers and site teams
Understanding design-check arrangements, independence and evidence of completion
Reviewing drawings, design assumptions, limitations and supplier information for coordination purposes
Controlling document revisions, queries, approvals and communication to site
Practical exercise: review a simulated design package and resolve coordination gaps

Day Four: Site Implementation, Inspection and Change Control

Linking approved information with installation planning, supervision and site briefings
Inspection and test plans, hold points and evidence required before authorisation
Coordinating permits to proceed, load, use or unload under the project procedure
Responding to changed conditions, unauthorised alterations and non-conformities
Practical exercise: assess an inspection and permit scenario, record a decision and escalate concerns

Day Five: Monitoring, Handover and Project Close-out

Maintaining oversight during use through inspections, communication and status reviews
Coordinating dismantling, removal and interfaces with the permanent works
Managing handovers, residual responsibilities and complete project records
Reviewing incidents, near misses and lessons to strengthen future procedures
Capstone exercise: present a temporary works coordination plan covering mobilisation to close-out
