Introduction
This course develops the technical and commercial judgement required to create high-quality lighting schemes with low energy demand. Participants progress from visual-task requirements and photometric data to calculations, controls, daylight integration, lifecycle evaluation and commissioning.
Objectives
- Interpret illuminance, luminance, efficacy, uniformity and glare criteria.
- Translate visual tasks, occupancy patterns and standards into a lighting brief.
- Perform lumen-method and point-by-point lighting calculations.
- Select efficient lamps, luminaires, drivers and optical distributions.
- Integrate daylight while controlling glare and unwanted heat gain.
- Design zoning, sensing, dimming and networked lighting controls.
- Evaluate lighting power density, energy savings and lifecycle cost.
- Plan testing, commissioning and post-occupancy performance verification.

- Reading photometric files and curves
Day 3: Lighting Calculations and Layout Development
- Lumen-method room calculations
- Utilisation and maintenance factors
- Point-by-point illuminance assessment
- Interior layout and spacing criteria
- Exterior and area-lighting principles
- Emergency-lighting coordination
Day 4: Daylight, Controls and Energy Performance
- Daylight availability and useful daylight
- Glare and solar-gain coordination
- Occupancy and vacancy sensing
- Daylight harvesting and dimming
- Zoning, schedules and control protocols
- Lighting power and energy modelling
Day 5: Optimisation, Retrofit and Commissioning
