Introduction
This course develops the multidisciplinary competence needed to engineer and operate grid-scale battery energy storage systems safely. It covers electrochemistry, performance and degradation, sizing, power conversion, controls, grid services, hazard analysis, fire protection, commissioning and end-of-life planning.
Objectives
- Compare battery chemistries using performance, risk and lifecycle criteria.
- Size battery power and energy capacity for defined grid applications.
- Specify cell, module, rack and balance-of-system architecture.
- Coordinate power-conversion, battery-management and energy-management controls.
- Assess grid-code, protection and interconnection requirements.
- Analyse thermal runaway, electrical and chemical hazards.
- Develop layered fire protection and emergency-response measures.
- Plan commissioning, monitoring, augmentation and end-of-life management.
