Introduction

This course develops a structured approach to laboratory safety and chemical hygiene. Participants assess experimental hazards, control chemical exposure, verify ventilation and containment, manage incompatible and specialised materials, establish waste and emergency arrangements and maintain a credible inspection and training programme.

Objectives

Define laboratory safety roles, rules and chemical hygiene requirements.
Assess hazards and scale-up risks before experimental work.
Manage chemical inventories, safety data and compatibility.
Evaluate fume hoods, local exhaust and containment controls.
Control compressed gases, cryogens and reactive materials.
Plan safe storage, transfer and laboratory-waste practices.
Prepare for spills, exposures, fires and equipment failures.
