Applied Virology and Viral Disease Control for Public Health Professionals Course
Apply virology to public health decisions, interpret test results and plan effective viral disease control through practical cases. Enrol with EPW today.
Training Outlines
Course Introduction
Effective viral disease control depends on understanding the pathogen, the exposed population and the limitations of available evidence. This course develops the judgement required to connect virological findings with public health action. Through structured cases, participants assess transmission pathways, interpret diagnostic information and justify prevention measures while considering feasibility, equity and uncertainty.
Course Objectives
- Explain how viral characteristics influence transmission, disease patterns and prevention choices
- Map transmission pathways and identify priority intervention points
- Interpret molecular, antigen and antibody test information in epidemiological context
- Appraise the strengths and limitations of virological and population-level evidence
- Develop a proportionate viral disease-control plan with implementation measures
- Present recommendations that distinguish established findings from uncertainty
Who Should Attend
Public health practitioners, communicable disease officers, infection prevention professionals, healthcare managers, health programme coordinators and policy specialists who use virological evidence in population-health decisions. No laboratory experience is required.
Course Methodology
Facilitated technical briefings, comparative disease cases, diagnostic-result interpretation, transmission mapping, small-group decision exercises and a final control-plan presentation. Exercises use simulated information and require no biological materials. Participants receive feedback on evidence interpretation, practical feasibility and communication.
Day One: Virology for Public Health Decisions
- Viral structure, replication and host interaction at a conceptual level
- Incubation, infectious periods, asymptomatic infection and disease severity
- Transmission routes, reservoirs, susceptible populations and exposure settings
- Viral variation and its implications for population-level prevention
- Practical exercise: map transmission and identify prevention opportunities
Day Two: Interpreting Virological Evidence
- Public health uses of molecular, antigen and antibody tests
- Sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and background prevalence
- Timing, test purpose and limitations of negative or persistent positive results
- Combining diagnostic reports with epidemiological and surveillance information
- Practical exercise: interpret simulated results and justify next steps
Day Three: Viral Disease Patterns and Control Priorities
- Comparing respiratory, enteric, blood-borne and vector-borne transmission
- Population vulnerability, exposure patterns and unequal disease burden
- Selecting appropriate prevention measures for different settings
- Interpreting genomic summaries without overstating transmission links
- Practical exercise: compare disease scenarios and prioritise control measures
Day Four: Designing Practical Disease-Control Measures
- Combining environmental, organisational and individual prevention measures
- Applying infection prevention principles in healthcare and community settings
- Positioning vaccination, testing and clinical referral within control programmes
- Balancing feasibility, equity, proportionality and public confidence
- Practical exercise: design a control package and implementation checklist
Day Five: Evidence, Communication and Programme Evaluation
- Selecting implementation, reach and disease-control indicators
- Interpreting trends when testing and reporting practices change
- Communicating risk, uncertainty and prevention decisions
- Reviewing effectiveness and adapting interventions as evidence changes
- Capstone exercise: present and defend a viral disease-control proposal
